A primer on what the high seas treaty is and how it will work

Approval of a high -sea treaty means that new protections will be possible for international waters for the first time. This is the first legally binding agreement aimed at protecting marine biodiversity in the waters that go beyond the jurisdiction of a single country. It is almost two thirds of the ocean. And they need it – the high seas undergoes increasing pressure of overfishing, climate change and the threat of high seas exploitation. The nations will have to meet in the year following the treaty which has taken effect to lay the foundations for its implementation.
