Judge Who Helped Illegal Migrant Escape ICE Resigns

A Wisconsin judge who helped an illegal alien evade U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has announced she will resign from her position in response to “unprecedented federal legal proceedings” filed against her.
WISN 12 News Political Director Matt Smith common a letter to Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) from Milwaukee Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan on
“As you know, I am the subject of an unprecedented federal legal proceeding that is far from concluded but presents immense and complex challenges that threaten the independence of our judiciary,” Dugan said. “I continue this fight for myself and for our independent judiciary. However, the citizens of Wisconsin that I cherish deserve to start the year with a judge sitting in Milwaukee County Branch 31 rather than letting the fate of this Court rest on a partisan fight in the state Legislature.”
Dugan went on to state that it was “with a heavy heart” that she submitted “this letter of resignation.”
“My faith in God and our legal system leads me to believe that in the long term, justice will be served for our independent judiciary and for me,” Dugan added.
Dugan’s letter comes after a Milwaukee jury in December convicted Dugan after he “escorted” Eduardo Flores Ruiz, an illegal immigrant, “out of his courtroom.” This conviction resulted from “obstruction of an official proceeding” in helping Flores Ruiz evade ICE officials.
While Dugan faces “up to five years in prison” as a result of her conviction, “as a first-time offender, she should receive little to no prison time,” according to the New York Times.
