SSome spider species harbor a secret at the center of their webs: silk decorations called “stabilimenta” that can look like anything from spiral doilies to zigzag X’s to intricate platforms and more, depending on the species. (Think of the “SOME PIG” ad in Charlotte’s website.) These mysterious structures have captivated researchers for years, and although their primary function remains a mystery, several have emerged.

Made from a silk distinct from the ordinary web scaffolding that surrounds them, stabilimenta reflect ultraviolet light, leading some scientists to suggest that their function is primarily visual: dazzling prey or warding off low-flying birds. A new study suggests that the function of at least some stabilizers may be mechanical.

A team of researchers studied stabilimenta using a combination of field observations of yellow and black weaver spiders (Argiope bruennichi) and computer simulations. After documenting the structures of stabilimenta in nature, the team then simulated them to determine how the presence of stabilimenta affects the transmission of vibrations from potential prey. Published in PLOS OneThe team said that stabilimenta can help transmit elastic vibrations from prey anywhere in the web, possibly helping spiders locate their prey, but only when the prey is moving parallel to the web’s spiral scaffold.

It’s another piece of the puzzle as to why spiders create these particular decorations, but with such a varied presence among a variety of species, there is still more research to be done before untangling this tangled web.
