A prescribed burn is scheduled to take place next week in the city watershed property off Gambrill Park Road, according to a press release sent Monday.

The burn will take place on a day between Nov. 17 and 21 if conditions are favorable.

Gambrill Park Road will be closed between its junction with Fishing Creek Road and Gate R6 during the burn, according to the press release.

The controlled burn is meant to restore a stand of pitch pine that is 95 years old. The burn will also reduce competing vegetation and the duff layer — a layer of decaying organic material on the forest floor.

The burning will help a new generation of pitch pine seedlings to take root, according to the press release.

The burn will be a low, controlled flame that will create smoke on Catoctin Mountain. Maryland Department of Natural Resources fire teams will be present to manage the fire.

No homes or other structures are in the area of the burn, according to the city.
