Philadelphia officer Andy Chan dies nearly 7 years after being critically injured in crash

A Philadelphia highway patrol officer who was struck by a vehicle and critically injured nearly seven years ago has died.

The Philadelphia FOP Lodge #5 announced Tuesday that Philadelphia Highway Patrol Officer Andy Chan passed away.

“His loss is felt deeply by all who knew him. We ask that you hold his wife, children, loved ones, friends, and his Brothers and Sisters in the Police Department in your prayers during this difficult time. Andy died a hero, and we will always remember and honor his sacrifice,” the FOP said in a statement.

Officer Chan’s motorcycle was struck by an elderly driver on a section of Rhawn Street in Northeast Philadelphia back in January 2019. He was 48 years old at the time.

The crash was deemed an accident, and the driver of the vehicle was not charged with a crime.

Officer Chan suffered brain damage and was in a coma and on a ventilator for several weeks following the accident.

“Whether he was unflinchingly confronting danger, supporting a critical incident, or simply offering a kind word in passing, Andy embodied the very best of what it means to serve,” the Philadelphia Police Department said in a statement.

Officer Chan’s cause of death has not yet been released.
