Police arrest 14-year-old suspected in attack on MK Yoav Ben-Tzur’s vehicle
The incident occurred amid heightened tensions within the ultra-Orthodox (haredi) community over military conscription legislation, which Shas supported.
A 14-year-old Jerusalem resident was arrested, Israeli police announced Sunday, a week after the attack on Shas MK Yoav Ben-Tzur’s car.
The incident occurred in central Jerusalem, where a group of ultra-Orthodox youths attacked the vehicle and caused damage as Ben-Tzur was leaving a weekly study session.
The arrest followed what police described as intensive operational and investigative work by the Jerusalem District Crime Unit. The teen was taken into custody and investigators said Sunday that efforts were underway to identify and arrest other suspects involved in the attack.
In its statement, police highlighted the seriousness of the attack, saying it involved “criminal elements trying to harm an elected official.” The force said it would deploy all available measures “to bring all those involved to justice”.
Conscription law creates tensions with Israel’s ultra-Orthodox community
The incident occurred amid heightened tensions within the ultra-Orthodox (haredi) community over military conscription legislation, which Shas supported. Ben-Tzur’s vehicle was targeted after he left a learning session, and no injuries were reported, although the car was damaged. The episode drew condemnation from across the political spectrum and from Shas, which said the attackers did not represent the general ultra-Orthodox public.
