The 2025-26 Serie A season is in full swing in Italy. Naples started the campaign as defending champions after winning the 2024-25 title, their fourth Scudetto on the final day of the season. Between And AC Milan will compete to win the Serie A title, while other teams like Napoli, A.S. Rome, AtalantaJuve, Bologna And Como are all vying for a place in next season’s European tournaments. This week’s Serie A slate features some interesting matchups, like the highly anticipated Derby della Madonnina between AC Milan and Inter on Sunday. Here’s what you need to know:
Milan Derby: last chance showdown with the Scudetto
Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina between AC Milan and Inter is not only one of the most anticipated and iconic matches of the season, but also a match that could determine the outcome of the 2025-26 Serie A season. Heading into Sunday’s match, Inter has a 10-point advantage over their crosstown rivals, and that is the main reason why an Inter win locks up the title, unless something happens. Something truly unexpected happens in the remaining weeks of the season. If Milan get all three points, Inter are still the big favorites, but the race remains on, at least potentially.
While Inter could deliver the hammer blow, the Nerazzurri have had some difficulties this season when they have had to face the best teams in the domestic championship and the championship stage of the Champions League. It’s something Inter have had to work on, but at the same time they have shown a lot of resilience since losing to Massimiliano Allegri’s AC Milan in November. Inter have won 14 of the last 15 Serie A matches, with only the 2-2 home draw against Napoli on January 11, and have been really focused on consolidating their league leadership, while losing track of their European run, as they were knocked out by Bodo/Glimt in the playoffs.
AC Milan, on the other hand, have been up and down recently, losing points in two consecutive home matches against Como (1-1) and especially losing against Parma at San Siro, achieving one of the most disappointing results of their season under Allegri. The Italian coach has repeated since the start of the season that the club’s primary objective is qualification for the Champions League. While that may still be the official goal, the fanbase began to believe in something more as the team got closer to the top of the standings. However, with the Derby della Madonnina approaching, the pressure is shifting towards Inter. The Nerazzurri have the opportunity to end AC Milan’s comeback hopes, which has already happened in the recent past. This time, Inter cannot allow history to repeat itself.
What’s next for San Siro?
In the meantime, this derby will be one of the last at San Siro, Milan’s iconic stadium, as it will be demolished. It is now official and the next Derby della Madonnina will be one of the last ever contested in this venue. In October 2025, the Milan city council voted to sell the stadium for 197 million euros ($231 million) to Milan’s two clubs, Inter and AC Milan, who own the arena and the areas surrounding it. The two historic teams belong to two American funds, Oaktree and RedBird, which have decided to launch the construction of a new stadium in the same area, with the current infrastructure having to be demolished at the same time. This not only happens, but also in a short time. Indeed, Inter president Giuseppe Marotta announced to DAZN Italy that the plan was to begin construction of the new arena in 2027 and to play the first official match in 2030, two years before the UEFA Euro 2032 which will also take place in the new stadium.
San Siro will still be the home of Inter and AC Milan for at least another three years, but there is already a sort of feeling of nostalgia when they play home matches. On February 6 this year, San Siro hosted the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, likely the last major event held at the stadium unrelated to football. In the years to come, there will be a lot more to say about San Siro and the new stadium planned in the same area. But if you’re thinking of traveling to Milan to watch a match at this historic ground, it’s worth starting planning now, as you may not have much time left to see it in person.
