Democrats Are Sleepwalking Into Their Own Trump Moment

The Democratic establishment has suffered yet another massive blow, as a new voice of the far left has emerged to join the likes of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. Not only was the loss embarrassing, but it also points to a generational crack-up that will change Democratic politics for years to come.

In the lead-up to the 2016 GOP primaries, Republicans were offering more of the same policies to voters that lost them two elections to Obama, in 2008 and 2012. At the time, none of the big, establishment candidates — not Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz, and most especially not Jeb Bush or John Kasich — were giving the base what they wanted: bold leadership willing to confront entrenched interests in the swamp, and tackle the country’s illegal immigration crisis and failed foreign wars. That is, until Donald Trump, a complete and total political outsider, rode down the golden escalator, surged in popularity, and changed the party for a generation. Owing to outright complacency, mediocre candidates, and a failure to find a stronger digital footprint and communicate policy ideas, Democrats are now sleepwalking into a similar reckoning: their own ‘Trump moment.’ (RELATED: A Decade Since The Golden Escalator Ride That Changed Politics Forever)
