DOGE Put Free Tax Filing Tool on Chopping Block After One Meeting With Lobbyists
When the so-called Ministry of Government Effectiveness (DOGE) arrived at the internal returned service earlier this year, group managers reassured workers that the agency’s free tax deposit tool, the direct file, would be spared by the cuts. But only a few days after meeting lobbyists of tax software, the beloved tool was placed on blocking, several familiar Tell Wired sources.
The plans to potentially kill the direct file, the free tax deposit tool developed by the IRS which serve 25 states, was launched by Sam Corcos, CEO of a health startup supported by Andreessen Horowitz which has links with SpaceX. Corcos’ suggestion to cut popular service was presented to the Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in early March, say multiple sources.
The weekend before the Corcos, he suggested putting an end to the direct file, he spoke positively to IRS engineers. Friday, he changed his air. While the cable sources were talking to understand it, the direct file would remain online during the 2025 tax declaration season, but would probably have died next year.
“Throughout the week, the tone had changed,” said a source. The decision to end the direct file “has come out of nowhere”.
A few days after the weekend meeting, Corcos told several sources that he had met Free Inc. (previously the Free File Alliance), a group of tax preparation software that associates the IRS to offer free online income declaration services. The group was organized by Intuit, which produced Turbotax, more than 20 years ago as a means of providing free deposit services to low -income taxpayers. In return, the IRS promised not to create its own online classification system managed by the government.
Before the day of the inauguration in January and well the following month, Doge Leadership, notably Steve Davis, CEO and President of the Boring Company of Elon Musk, and Amy Gleason, acting administrator for the American service Doge, said they were impressed by the direct file project and reassured the engineering team that worked in complete safety, said several sources. (Although Davis is far from the government last month, he continued to direct meetings and give orders to the representatives of Doge.
The IRS did not immediately respond to a request for wired comments. Corcos is now the Treasury Information Director.

Before the departure of Intuit, Propublica indicated that the code had been introduced in the version of the company on the free file website which essentially hidden the service at search engines like Google, which makes it almost impossible to find without going there directly.
