American science is under attack. Recent cuts to federal agency funding and staffing, layoffs of scientists, and cancellation of billions of dollars in grants are unprecedented in U.S. history and threaten the stability of the scientific infrastructure that since World War II has made the United States the world’s scientific leader. So perhaps now is not the right time to raise questions about scientific integrity. When someone burns down your house, it’s probably not a good time to worry about cleaning it up. But if someone tries to dismantle your house, now is a good time to shore up its foundation.
