2026 Genesis G70 sports sedan starts cheaper than the Lexus IS

Cheaper, but also one of the best in its category

For a long time now, if you’re looking for a slightly less expensive luxury vehicle, Lexus has been the brand for you. They’re usually a few thousand dollars cheaper than their competitors, although that means making a few small sacrifices along the way. However, Genesis is shaking things up. The G70 sports sedan is one of the more affordable options in this segment, but unlike Lexus, we don’t think it makes any compromises to get there.

The luxury compact sedan segment is full of quite heavy models, although they all command a fairly high price. While the G70 isn’t exactly cheap, it starts thousands less than its main rivals. Even the traditionally affordable Lexus IS starts higher, with an MSRP of $46,795. Despite its affordable price, we think the Genesis sedan is one of the best options in this segment.

For the 2026 model year, Genesis has significantly reduced options. A ton of optional extras have been removed from the menu, but the only truly disappointing exclusion is the adaptive dampers you could get on the 3.3T Prestige. The Korean automaker compensates in some ways, however. The Prestige Graphite trim joins the range with unique interior and exterior styling. A heated steering wheel is now standard on all models except the rear-wheel-drive 2.5T Standard. A surround-view camera is also now standard on higher trims and optional on the 2.5T Prestige.

Best value for money trim level

We don’t really think there’s a bad value option, and choosing a version depends on the features you want. If we had to choose, we’d go with the 3.3T Sport Prestige. It comes with the more powerful turbocharged V6 as well as heated and ventilated leather seats, a sunroof and a premium audio system. Opting for this model also gives you the option of adding a limited-slip differential, which isn’t an option if you stick to the four-cylinder models.

One of the main reasons people choose to buy in this segment is because they are looking for something a little sportier. While the Lexus IS is no slouch, it feels much more relaxed than you might expect from a compact sports sedan. Even though the G70 is less expensive, it feels like a more refined and well-rounded luxury car, with the ability to be both quiet and loud.

Performance of the 2026 Genesis G70

Genesis gives you the choice of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a twin-turbo V6. Both are mated to a traditional eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is the standard configuration, with all-wheel drive optional on every model. We’ll stick with rear-wheel drive, though, as we think it makes small sedans like this much livelier.

Neither configuration puts the G70 in the same leagues as some of the best players in the segment in terms of acceleration, but if you’re looking for fun, then the Genesis definitely delivers. It sounds cheerful enough, but what really impresses is how dynamic it is. Its ride and handling are perfectly balanced, providing a smooth experience on most surfaces while also being capable of shredding back roads. Adjustable driving modes allow you to completely change the G70’s personality, from comfortable cruiser to aggressive sport sedan.

Fuel economy

Probably one of the biggest weaknesses of Hyundai products is their efficiency. While not impossible to live with, the G70 is one of the thirstier options in this segment. Even if you stick with the four-cylinder option, you’ll spend more on fuel than if you’d opted for something like a BMW 3 Series. The V6 uses even more gas.

No one offers interior design as good as Genesis

We are currently seeing a massive wave in the luxury market, where automakers are investing heavily in futuristic designs. Massive dual-screen setups taking up the entire dashboard and touch panels everywhere you look are up to the task. To our eyes, the old-school approach taken by Genesis seems much more luxurious. Despite an older approach to design, we also think they also offer some of the most interesting technologies in their cars.

Ultimately, the G70 is a compact sports sedan, so don’t expect much practicality. While those in the front will be very comfortable, those in the rear seats might have some complaints. Cargo capacity is also low for the segment, but there’s still enough room for a grocery run or a few weekend bags.

While design is subjective, we think Genesis creates some of the most beautifully designed interiors on the market. The G70 is the perfect example, with premium materials used on almost every surface. Build quality is fantastic and the switchgear throughout the cabin feels solid. Things like Nappa leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control are all available.

Infotainment and technology

The G70 uses a more traditional setup for its screens, with a separate digital gauge display and infotainment screen. The 10.3-inch infotainment screen sticks out from the dashboard and looks sleek and unobtrusive. The gauge cluster is displayed on a 12.3-inch high-definition screen.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all models. There are a few standard USB ports, with most models also benefiting from a wireless smartphone charger. The 3.3T models also come with the brand’s digital key functionality, which allows you to turn your smartphone into a key. Higher trims also come with a fantastic Lexicon audio system.
