Trump’s 87% GOP Support Surges Past All 21st-Century Presidents

Donald Trump continues to enjoy overwhelming support from Republican voters, with CNN data confirming that 87% of Republicans currently approve of the president – unchanged from six months ago.
This note of approval places Trump leads all other 21st century presidents in his party’s support for his second term, eclipsing both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, who each held 78% approval from their respective parties at the same point in their presidency.
Harry Enten, CNN’s chief data analyst, described Trump’s position as unshakable: “He’s like a rock,” he said, referring to Bob Seger. “The Republican base remains with Donald Trump right now.” Enten pointed out that Trump has not lost any Republican support in the past six months, reinforcing the narrative that despite changing political dynamics elsewhere, the president’s support within the GOP remains constant.
In the same CNN segment, Enten highlighted Trump’s unprecedented influence in the Republican primaries. Data shows that in 2020, Trump-backed candidates won 98% of Republican congressional and gubernatorial primaries. This trend continued with a success rate of 95% in 2022 and 96% in 2024. “When you go up against Donald Trump,” Enten noted, “you go up against a buzzsaw.”
This approval record underscores the political context facing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who recently announcement she would resign from Congress in January. According to market forecasts, she has a 31% chance of leaving the Republican Party by 2027. While Greene quoted Disappointed with both parties upon his resignation, Harry Enten of CNN pointed out that “most of the time when you face Donald Trump in a Republican primary, you lose almost all the time”, suggesting that this may have been a contributing factor.
In July and August, Trump’s approval ratings among Republicans climbed at 88 and 90 percent in CNN and Quinnipiac polls, respectively, even as renewed attention to the Epstein case dominated social media. CNN’s Harry Enten noted that despite the online outcry, only one Republican surveyed cited the Epstein issue as a major national concern. Meanwhile, an Associated Press (AP) poll recorded Trump’s overall job approval rating rose to a personal high of 45% after deploying the National Guard to combat violent crime in Washington, DC.
