Trump administration removing 988 hotline service tailored to LGBTQ+ youth in July

988 National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline will cease to provide tailor -made support options to young LGBTQ adults + on July 17, according to a press release on the website of a federal agency.
The decision pre -empt the budget proposal for the Trump administration in 2026 to reduce the funding of youth and young LGBTQ + 988 adult services, and raises alarms among the LGBTQ + defenders.
Federal data show that the LGBTQ + Youth program served nearly 1.3 million calls since it started in September 2022. The services were accessible under the “Press 3” option on the phone or by responding “Pride” by SMS.

The decision was taken to “no longer silo” the services and “focus on the service of all help seekers, including those previously served by the Press 3 option,” said the U.S. toxicomania website on Tuesday.

The Trevor project will continue to manage its 24/7 mental health support services, just like other organizations, and the leaders of 988 say that the hotline will serve anyone who calls with compassion.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention American said that there were 49,300 suicides in 2023 – on the highest level in the country’s history, based on preliminary data.
Studies have shown that young LGBTQ + are more at risk of suicide, including a 2024 analysis by the CDC which revealed that 26% of transgender and interviewed students tried to commit suicide in the past year. This is compared to 5% of cisgenres men and 11% of Cisgenres students.
The young Transgender flooded the Hotlines of call crisis after the re -election of President Donald Trump. Trump has made anti-transgender themes at the heart of his campaign and has since returned numerous protections of civil rights and access to care affirmed by the sexes.
Trump signed the National Hotline Act Hotline Suicide of 2020 in October 2020.
The specific sub-program of 988 for young LGBTQ + cost $ 33 million during the year 2024, according to Samhsa, and in June 2025, more than $ 33 million was spent on services. The Trump administration’s budget proposal in 2026 planned to maintain the total budget from $ 988 to $ 520 million, even while eliminating LGBTQ +services.
The Secretary of Health, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., wants to wrap Samhsa and other agencies in a new HHS office called administration for a healthy America, where she would coexist with employees other agencies responsible for chemical exhibitions and work -related injuries.
