In a hard-hitting assessment of the DOJ’s targeting of Trump enemies, Politico columnist Ankush Khardori notes that they produced a series of embarrassing stumbles. These include chilling efforts targeting James, Comey and Schiff, and even a baseless effort to sue Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, essentially for angering Trump, which backfired, drawing widespread criticism. The failed prosecution of Democratic lawmakers, Khardori writes, is Pirro’s “most high-profile failure to date.”

Yet the stakes remain extraordinarily high. Anyone who is targeted in this way must spend enormous amounts of time and money on self-defense. This threatens to stifle dissent among high-profile lawmakers, institutions and individual critics, who may be muzzled rather than investigated and potentially prosecuted. In fact, it probably already is.

It’s easy to get seduced by the Keystone Kops vibe in all of this. But these Keystone Kops continue to wield the enormous power of the federal criminal justice bureaucracy, and they have tied it to the chaotic whims of a mad king who thinks being a Democrat who criticizes him is an actionable crime. That they have failed so far is encouraging. But all indications are that Trump will continue to demand these lawsuits until one of them succeeds – or, perhaps, until several of them succeed.
