EMTs deliver baby on side of Bronx highway during Friday night’s snowstorm

Ice cream, ice cream, baby!
Two intrepid first responders helped deliver a baby on the side of a Bronx highway in the middle of Friday night’s big snowstorm, according to an FDNY article on X.
Paramedics Henry Garcia and Rachel Rosado of FDNY EMT Station 3, serving the Southeast Bronx and Castle Hill, responded to a call for a woman in labor. But they soon realized that the baby would arrive sooner than expected.
As the baby’s head began to emerge, cool-headed doctors stopped to deliver safely on the side of the Bronx River Parkway.
Garcia had experience in childbirth, already having a few under her belt as an FDNY EMT. Meanwhile, it was a first for Rosado on the job. Yet the two partners worked together seamlessly, attributing their teamwork to their excellent communication.
“It was my first delivery, and it was communication that made it possible,” Rosado said. “Once we realized it was an imminent labor, everything clicked. We bounced back and gave birth instantly, with no complications. My partner guided me every step of the way and we worked together to keep both baby and mother safe. Despite the circumstances, it turned into a beautiful delivery, and it’s something I’ll never forget.”
“It was my third delivery and I know how important communication was at that point,” Garcia said. “I told my partner that the second (the woman) felt uncomfortable or noticed any crowning, we would stop. Once that happened, we called to stop on the Bronx River Parkway and deliver on site. Everything went well because we trusted each other and stayed focused on what was best for mother and baby.”
This was the 91st baby delivered by FDNY EMS in New York in 2025.
“Mom and baby are doing well thanks to clear communication, teamwork and decisive actions,” the FDNY said. “Moments like this are a reminder that an EMT’s call to action can come at any time and that FDNY members are always ready to respond.”
