NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers captured this lightning image while in orbit aboard the International Space Station more than 250 miles above Milan, Italy, July 1, 2025. Observations of storms from the space station help scientists study Earth’s upper atmosphere, which can improve weather models and protect communications systems and aircraft. The space station crew takes photographs of Earth that show how the planet changes over time due to human activity and natural events. This file allows scientists to monitor disasters and respond directly on the ground and study the phenomena.
