Apple defends the anodized design as tested and sustainable but admits normal wear; Users want fixes in future models.
In case you live under a rock, it seems that the monocoque aluminum design of the iPhone 17 Pro is, as, really subject to scratches. Like, a lot. Apple, for its part, seems to be playing concerns.
Apple has clarified the nature of the brands observed on store units. The company said that after an internal investigation, it determined that imperfections are not scratches in the finish of the phone. Instead, they are the result of “transfer of materials” from used Magsafe display stands used in certain retail environments. According to Apple, the protective coating on these stands can wear out over time, which means that the material will rub on the phones to which they are attached. The company says that these brands can be deleted by cleaning the device and other iPhone models, including the iPhone 16, have also been affected by the same problem. Apple would take measures to solve the problem at the store level, which probably involves replacing the worn stands.
It could be part of the problem, but that’s not the whole story. As we covered earlier, the acute and raised edges of the iPhone 17 Pro camera are particularly sensitive to damage. The tests show that the anodized coating on these corners could flake or go away with relative ease, exposing the raw aluminum underneath.
Responding to this discovery, Apple explained that the edges of the camera on the iPhone 17 Pro share similar design and materials with anodized aluminum edges found on many of its other products, including various MacBook models and previous iphones. Society insists that the design is sustainable and has passed its vast internal test protocols. However, Apple has also recognized that, like any product with such edges, users can observe signs of “normal wear” over the life of the device, which could include minor abrasions.
For some people, it may seem that Apple tries to play the problem. And I understand this perspective. If more user complaints start to flock, it could be enough for Apple to examine it. He will not repair this generation, but he could make design choices or a different aluminum treatment for the iPhone 18 Pro (if it is always an aluminum monohull), so it is actually more decent.
