Luminescence characteristics of Eu-doped CaF₂ crystals vary with radiation type, study shows

Scintillators convert energy from radiation to light and are used in a variety of fields, including medicine and safety. Among the many CAF₂ crystals (calcium fluoride), many scintillators, CAF₂ crystals (calcium fluoride) due to their high light yield (around 20,000 photons / MEV), excellent optical transparency and chemical stability.
Previously, the wavelength of emotilier emotiliers was considered independent of the type of radiation. In a new study by the University of Tsukuba, several CAF₂ crystals with different EU doping concentrations were synthesized and irradiated with alpha particles and X -rays to systematically study color (wavelength) and the intensity of the light emitted.
The results, published in Scientific relationshipsshowed that the report of the emission induced by the EU²⁺ (wavelength: ~ 420 nm) to the emission induced by the EU³⁺ (wavelength: 590–695 nm) varies depending on the type of radiation. In addition, for the same sample, when the emission of EU²⁺ was maintained constant, the emission of the EU³⁺ proved to be about twice as strong under the irradiation of the α particles compared to the irradiation of X -rays.
This suggests that differences in light color could be used to identify the types of radiation, an observation that has the potential for use in unique applications, including dose measures in complex environments such as nuclear installation sites.
These results should pave the way for new methods of particle identification and new generation radiation detection technologies. In the future, researchers plan to develop a technique that records the tracks of coloring in color by integrating this method into an optical system using lenses, thus creating a means of identifying the types of particles, such as alpha particles and X -rays, depending on color.
