Artists given chance to use wood from felled Sycamore Gap tree | Conservation
The artists are invited to create ideas to create an “important national” work from the wood of the Sycamore Fat tree has been illegally shot dead which, the organizers, hope, galvanize and inspiring.
The National Trust revealed details of a huge creative commission, offering artists, organizations or creative agencies to use half of the tree wood to produce something incredible.
The announcement comes on the occasion of the second anniversary of the slaughtered tree. The trust said that she wanted proposals that “breathe life” in wood.
It was during Storm Agnes in the early hours of September 28, 2023 that two men from Cumbria, Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers, went to the Hadrian wall in Northumberland to reduce the world tree and very appreciated.
The tree, which would have been planted at the end of the 19th century by the landowner John Clayton, had become an emblem in northeast of England and the site of countless marriage proposals, birthday celebrations and ash dispersions.
Its slaughter brought an international effusion of sadness and anger, and caused debates on our relationship with nature.

Confidence aims at the new commission to transform a feeling of loss “into a feeling of hope, creative possibility and reconnection with the natural world”.
Annie Reilly, director of public commitment to the National Trust, said: “Two years ago, we lost something very special in a very popular landscape. This commission is a way to mark the inheritance of this emblematic tree while pursuing an important conversation on our collective relationship with nature.
“After carefully taking care of the wood since the slaughter, we are now ready to bring it back to people, in a completely new and transformed way.
“We want artists and organizations to offer proposals that will inspire the public to connect with the nature and the landscapes that surround them, using wood as a symbolic focal point.
“It could be a design for a single work of art for a place or more parts or something more dispersed or participative. We want to reach and engage many people and look forward to seeing the ideas. ”
The trust said that she would invite people and groups to submit ideas between October 13 and November 17. Up to five will then be preselected and offered £ 5,000 to develop their ideas.
They will be judged by experts and put a public vote, with a winner announced in February 2026.
He said that the Commission would have a budget of £ 200,000 and that the proposals are encouraged “which can galvanize the chosen audience and which can reach a mass audience through the United Kingdom”.
Confidence has added: “We are considering proposals will create something that will have a national impact and relevance and which will use wood to engage and inspire many people.”
The organizers said that the remaining Wood Sycamore Gap was seasoned to prolong his life and were in a variety of shapes and sizes.
The largest remaining section of the tree is permanent exhibition as part of an exhibition at The Sill, the reception center near Sycamore Gap.
Young tree plants, 49 “trees of hope”, were given to various good causes across the United Kingdom, including the Alder Hey Children hospital in Liverpool and the Rob Burrow Center for Motor Neurone, in Leeds.
