Germany coach Mumbro back in hospital for surgery after Euro title
The coach of the German national basketball team Alex Mumbru went to the hospital in his native Spain after the victory of the title Euribasket 2025 to undergo pancreatitis surgery.
The German basketball federation (DBB) told DPA that this treatment was necessary and that Mumbro should come back for qualifications in the World Cup in November.
Mumbro was hospitalized two days before the start of euros and spent five in a clinic in Finland. He returned to the team, but apart from a match, the coaches’ tasks remained with his assistant Alan Ibrahimagic.
The world champions in Germany won the title on Sunday in Riga by beating Turkey in the final. Mumbro did not participate in post-match celebrations and was also absent from Monday reception in Frankfurt on the return of the team.
“Health comes first. I told him throughout the tournament: do what you can do. He wanted to be part of it, which was not unreasonable – not even from a medical point of view,” said DBB president Ingo Weiss.
“Our team doctor took care of Alex and watched him throughout his stay in Riga.”
Sports director Peter Radegast said in an interview on the DBB website that Mumbro “was very sick.
“He himself revealed that it was an acute pancreatitis caused by gallstones. The pain had to be terrible; he was given analgesic strong in Tampere hospital to help him rest,” he said.
