One question haunts the mind when reading Scott Johnston’s The Sandersons Fail Manhattan, a satire of the college admissions racket: is it a work of historical fiction or current reporting? Until yesterday, the novel’s targets—the demeaning of elites before the gatekeepers of higher education and the ruthless social hierarchies imposed by those gatekeepers—seemed to be unshakable features of America’s ruling classes and institutions.
