An Aurora man has been sentenced to 25 years in state prison for a knife attack in 2023, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said on Friday in a news release.

In court, Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Kelly Orland said the incident happened on Nov. 12, 2023, when Duka Smith, 49, of the 400 block of West Downer Place, and the victim had a disagreement at an apartment, the news release said. The disagreement became physical, and Smith began stabbing the victim with a knife, according to the release.

The victim left the apartment, the release said, but Smith followed him to the parking lot and continued to stab him in the face, head, abdomen and chest while he was on the ground, which was caught on surveillance video, according to the release.

After Smith stopped, the victim was ultimately able to move to another location, the release said, where he was found. He has since recovered from his injuries, officials said.

Smith received the sentence of 25 years in prison in exchange for pleading guilty to armed violence, per the release. He is eligible for day-for-day sentencing, and received credit for 588 days served in Kane County jail, officials said.
