ATLANTA – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the man who opened fire in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as Patrick Joseph White, 30, from Kennesaw, Georgia.

The GBI declaration indicates that White has died and officer David Rose with the dekalb county police service was shot in the shooting on Friday.

The shooter opened fire outside the CDC seat, hitting windows on the sprawling campus and killing the officer before being found dead in a neighboring building, the authorities said. The attack caused a massive response to applying the law to one of the country’s most eminent public health institutions, but no one else would have been injured.

At least four CDC buildings have been affected, said director Susan Monarez in an article on X. The images shared by employees have shown several agency buildings with blocking windows, highlighting the extent of damage to a site where thousands of scientists and staff work on critical research on disease.

The shooter was found on the second floor of a building opposite the CDC campus and died on the scene, said Atlanta police chief Darin Schierbaum. He added on Friday that “we do not know at the moment if it came from officers or if it was self-inflicted”.

The shooter was armed with a long pistol and the authorities recovered three other firearms from the scene, according to a law manager who spoke under the cover of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss the current investigation.

The shooter’s motive is still unknown at the start of the investigation, Atlanta mayor Andre Dickens said on Friday.

A voicemail left to a phone number listed for White in public archives was not immediately returned on Saturday morning.

Rose, 33, was a former navy who served in Afghanistan and graduated from the police academy in March and “quickly obtained respect for his colleagues for his dedication, his courage and his professionalism, said the county of Dekalb in a press release.

“Tonight there is a woman without husband. There are three children, one to be born, without father,” said the CEO of the county of Dekalb, Lorraine Cochran-Johnson.
