YouTube rolls out new parental controls for Shorts videos to help families

YouTube is rolling out new parental controls designed to give families more say over how much time teens spend browsing Shorts.
Parents can now set daily time limits or block Shorts altogether, depending on what works best for their household. The update comes as concerns grow about endless scrolling and its impact on teens.
YouTube says these tools are intended to support healthier viewing habits while allowing younger users to enjoy the platform in a more balanced way.

The goal is to give families flexibility instead of imposing an all-or-nothing approach.
What parents can now control on YouTube
If you supervise a teen’s Google account, you can now:
- Define a daily time limit for YouTube Shorts
- Block shorts completely by setting the limit at zero minutes
- To light up bedtime reminders
- Enable break alerts
- Manage supervised teen accounts in multiple devices
YouTube also says it is adjusting how content is recommended to teens, with more emphasis on videos related to curiosity, life skills, inspiration and credible information that promotes well-being.
How Parents Limit or Block YouTube Short Films for Teens
Before you begin, make sure:
- Your teenager uses a supervised Google account
- You have access to Google Family Connection
- Your teenager is logged in to YouTube on their device with this supervised account
Step by step instructions
- Open it Google Family Connection on your phone or tablet (iPhone or Android).
- Press your adolescent profile.
- Faucet Controlsthen select YouTube.If YouTube does not appear, confirm that the account is set to supervised.
- If YouTube doesn’t appear, confirm that the account is set up as supervised.
- Faucet Screen time Or Short Film Settings.
- Look for the option titled Daily Short Film Limit.
- Choose how long your teen can scroll through Shorts each day: Set a deadline To allow limited scrolling, set the limit to zero minutes to completely block the Shorts

What happens when your teenager reaches the limit for Shorts?
Once the daily limit is reached:
- THE Shorts Power Locks
- A message explains that the daily limit has been reached
- Shorts automatically unlock the the following day
Regular and long-form YouTube videos remain available unless you restrict them separately via screen time controls.
Important things parents should know
- Teenagers cannot modify or circumvent Short films have their own limitations
- Limits apply everywhere all devices connected to the supervised account
- Short film controls are separated global YouTube screen time limits
- Blocking shorts does not block standard YouTube videos
Other Parenting Tools to Check Out
Beyond Shorts, parents can also:
- Turn off autoplay
- Goodbye watch And search history
