Former President Barack Obama has clarified that during his time in office he saw “no evidence” that aliens actually existed, after declaring the existence of aliens in a podcast clip that blew up over the weekend.

Obama spoke with podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen for an interview published Saturday.

Toward the end of the interview, Cohen asked Obama a series of questions in what he called a “blitz” — starting strong with the question most Americans want answered: “Are aliens real?”

“They’re real, but I haven’t seen them, and they’re not guarded at Area 51. There’s no underground facility unless there’s this huge conspiracy and they hid it from the President of the United States,” Obama responded nonchalantly.

Cohen then moved directly to his second question, asking the former president what was the first question he wanted answered when he took office in 2008.

Laughing, Obama replied, “Where are the aliens?”

This clip made the rounds on the Internet this weekend, prompting Obama to post it to his Instagram account with a clarifying caption.

Obama said he was “trying to stick to the spirit of the speed round” in answering this question, but wanted to clarify his answer.

“Statistically, the universe is so vast that there’s a good chance there’s life out there,” Obama said on Instagram. “But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances of us being visited by aliens are low, and I have seen no evidence during my presidency that aliens have made contact with us. Really!”

Conspiracy theorists have long believed that the government is keeping aliens at a highly classified U.S. Air Force base in southern Nevada, but there is no evidence to support these claims.
