Bayern Munich News: The aftermath of Germany’s 4-3 win over Switzerland

Germany arrived in Switzerland looking to build momentum on their World Cup run and that might actually have contributed to creating more doubt than confidence despite a 4-3 victory.

Switzerland is no pushover, but Germany has done little to establish itself as a potential favorite for the next World Cup.
Simply put, it looked pretty much the same thing. Let’s go, here are some quick hitters on the match:
-
As always, let’s start by taking a look at Julian Nagelsmann’s starting lineup:
-
Nagelsmann’s lineup offered few surprises. Leroy Sané has a chance, but it seems many fans are skeptical about his ability to stay “on his feet” during the struggles of a tournament.
-
In the 6th minute, Kimmich hammered Dan Ndoye with an attempted pass which hit Ndoye’s noggin.
-
Switzerland boss Murat Yakin looks like Niko Kovač, if Kovač were an international spy with a penchant for strong drinks and fast women (or maybe hard women and fast drinks?). Either way, it’s a solid look.
-
Schlotterbeck is really developing into a great #1 type center back, but he’s still making unnecessary mistakes.
-
Germany took control of the match very early on.
-
Havertz almost scored in the 13th minute, but his sliding effort hit Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
-
Gnabry had a good look a few minutes later, but his volley attempt hit traffic as it headed toward the net.
-
Ndoye got his revenge on Kimmich’s misplaced pass by scoring against an extremely lackadaisical effort from the German defense. Kimmich and Tah, in particular, left a lot to be desired in the room.
-
This is how all the worst fears about Nagelsmann came to the forefront for German fans.
-
The Germans were too rigid offensively and not creative enough, but they would get a reprieve. Tah would head home a cross from Florian Wirtz after a quick corner. Germany needed it the most.
-
Havertz took a good shot in the 32nd minute, but Kobel saved it. Havertz would put another shot over the crossbar in the 36th minute.
-
Sané and Gnabry just didn’t look comfortable for Germany. Léon Goretzka was not much better.
-
Breel Embolo would get the better of Tah on a planned goal rush only to land his header on a Silvan Widmer cross to make it 2-1 in favor of the Swiss in the 41st minute. The game started with a bad pass from Schlotterbeck.
-
A minute later, sloppy play from the Germans caused another break for Switzerland, which sent Fabian Rieder’s rocket hitting the crossbar. Yeah, it looked like Germany was in shambles at the end of the half, but…
-
Gnabry, after a dismal half, produced a fantastic finish from a superb pass from Wirtz. What a fucking room!
-
If you haven’t seen Wirtz’s pass, you need to.
-
In the 61st minute, Wirtz unleashed an incredible shot from a short corner that dipped just under the crossbar at the far post. Wirtz…simply incredible!
-
Bayern Munich phenom Lennart Karl would make his debut in the 63rd minute.
-
At that point, Germany just had to settle in and protect its lead…and above all, avoid doing anything stupid.
-
Switzerland’s Miro Muheim sent a pass through traffic towards Joël Monteiro, who collected it and took advantage of some horrible defending from Goretzka and Tah to unleash an absolute cracker and knot the game at 3-3.
-
Germany couldn’t avoid doing something stupid.
-
But in the 85th minute, Wirtz once again bailed out Germany with a new goal on a perfectly placed shot! The play started with a superb return to recover the ball from Tah before finally getting to Karl, who used his dribbling to break down the Swiss defense. From there, the ball finally reached Pascal Groß, who had just passed to Wirtz to set up the goal. Wirtz was sensational.
-
Overall, it was a match full of great individual moments, but clearly not what fans would expect for the World Cup. It’s great that Germany won and the fans were treated to a spectacular performance from Wirtz, but it has to be much better going forward.
