Bears Escape Wildlife Park in Search of Predictable Object
Two bears in the United Kingdom knew exactly what they were after when they escaped from their wildlife park, and they completed their mission in short order before a well-earned nap.
Mish and Lucy, both age four, escaped from their enclosure at Wildwood Devon in England on Monday afternoon.
The two brown bear cubs immediately made their way to a nearby food storage area, where they dined on a feast that included a seven-day supply of honey.
The park noted that the bears “posed no threat to the public at any point” during their hour-long honey expedition, and that they were monitored through closed circuit cameras the entire time.
Guests at Wildwood Devon were moved to a secure building, but that was the only precaution taken during the bears’ field trip.
“Our experienced keeping team acted immediately, following established safety protocols, and successfully used recall training to encourage both bears back into their enclosure without the need for any intervention,” the park added.
Wildwood Devon noted that an “operational error” allowed the bears to escape from their enclosure, but did not elaborate on what specifically happened that let them leave.
Local police are investigating the matter, consistent with the park’s report.
“This was an isolated incident, and we are conducting a full internal investigation to understand exactly how it happened and to ensure robust measures are in place to prevent a reoccurrence,” Wildwood Devon said.
The park, located in the southwestern part of England, is home to several animals including foxes and wolves.
“While the structural integrity of the bear enclosure remains uncompromised, we take any operational lapse extremely seriously.”
The park noted that it is back open for business, and that there is no concern to the public or any visitors who may want to see the bears after their viral moment.
“Here’s footage of Lucy caught red handed, looking very pleased with herself after filling up in the food store and both bears passed out afterwards,” the park said, sharing closed circuit video of one of the bears getting into the honey supply.
We’ll see if these adventurous bears find their way out again for another excursion, and if more honey is involved this time around.
