On CNN’s “The Lead” Wednesday, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) said President Donald Trump wants to “wage a war on people who are not white.”

Host Jake Tapper said, “So, Democratic Leader Schumer just highlighted Democratic leadership’s demands for changes to ICE. They strengthen the use of warrants, end roving patrols, enforce a code of conduct, and ask ICE agents to remove masks and wear body cameras. In your opinion, do these demands go far enough, or is it good? Is it enough?”

Murphy said: “Well, they certainly don’t go as far as I would like. But, you know, we operate in a world where Republicans control the House, the Senate and the White House. So we try to make our demands both forceful and reasonable. I think what we’re thinking about are practices that offend and shock Americans. I think one of them is the secret masked police that just shouldn’t be allowed on the streets of our city, put body cameras on these officers, take away the masks. Second, roving patrols, where they just ask people to show their papers. That’s not really America. That’s why we would demand arrest warrants, as we usually do, and then accountability, just to make sure that if a crime is committed like this murder, there will be normal, regular accountability, which will include a state investigation. completes the reforms we need at DHS, but we feel like this is something we can accomplish in a matter of days.

He added: “This policy is Donald Trump’s policy. You know, sometimes we want to pretend like someone else is running America’s immigration policy. Donald Trump is being told to use exactly what he wants to use. He wants to wage a war on people who aren’t white, who have an accent, who come from a different place.”
