How Engineers Can Adapt to AI’s Growing Role in Coding

I recently had a conversation with a Microsoft engineer who was both excited and concerned about the triplage of his output using an assortment of AI tools.

Wow, I thought, it’s incredible! Even an increase in productivity of 50% is incredible, but an increase of 3x is astounding. So what was his cause of concern?

She felt worried that she did not really learn, because she had delegated almost all the work of implementation to AI tools like Cursor and Github Copilot. The result was a superficial understanding of his work, which led both to anxiety and guilt.

Yes, I accepted, it was a source of concern. You may be able to achieve more in the short term, but the overuse of AI will eventually cause career stagnation. This has led to a broader conversation: how can we ensure our professional success when we enter the era where AI is more and more capable?

An IEEE article entitled “The daily life of software developers” revealed that “developers are surprisingly for a short time to code, 9% to 61% of the working day depending on the study”. According to my own experience as a main engineer in companies like Pinterest and Meta, I probably spent about 40% of my time writing code. The remaining time has been devoted to information collection, to read the documentation, to help colleagues or to debug. As the AI coding tools become greater, more of our time will pass from simple code writing.

This is where the response to adaptation for the future lies: becoming incredible to “fill the gaps” for the work that AI can do. Use AI for coding tasks by heart, but maintain your critical thinking skills for the important part of your work that goes beyond writing the code. Here are examples of premium skills in the future:

  • DEBOGRAPHY AND Revision of the code generated by AI
  • Monitor software and work with other (human) teams to solve problems
  • Decompose a commercial objective in smaller steps that we could feed an AI

Returning to the engineer Microsoft, I told him that an indication of a healthy AI relationship is to have opinions on the exit. You must be able to defend or criticize the code generated by AI tools. Otherwise, you may be replaced by AI instead of being amplified by AI. A drop in productivity (from an efficiency gain of 300% to 50%!) Is a fine compromise to do, as long as you build a property mentality.

The ultimate currency in the workplace now and in the future, is confidence. Are you in the process of realizing to be responsible for your work, or are you just perceived what the spit? Whether you are a new graduate of the university or an experienced engineer, you must develop your role in the knowledge economy to become a productive collaborator with AI.
