The most important part of any thermometer test is precision. We lay these most strongly criteria when compilation of entries to the best list, and it is the most scientific tests. We use a medical quality thermometer as a reference basis for precision and test the variance of the meat probe at this temperature.

Icy water tests

The precision test of a thermometer generally involves a cup, ice cubes and water. Due to the nature of the water, it can be a liquid and a solid at 32F (0C) so that we can make it be reliably. By filling a large glass of ice cubes and adding water – refrigerated water so that the ice does not melt – you can bring this water back to 32F.

We then insert both the medical quality probe and the meat probe that we test and move it until the medical quality thermometer indicates 32F. When this happens, we record the temperature reading of the meat probe that we test to see what, if necessary, there is.

Why don’t we use heat?

One might think that the use of heat would make sense. After all, these are probes to grill meat, so high heat is more important, right? Unfortunately, heat depends on many factors, such as altitude and pressure, which we cannot always control. The water freezing point is always the same, however, wherever you are, we can therefore ensure an independent precision of the location.
