Let’s be honest, sending Christmas cards is not a fun task during the holidays. This takes time and can even be quite expensive. Using AI to generate a Christmas card “from scratch” is tempting, but it’s a surefire way to end up in my trash.
There have been many attempts to modernize the practice of sending Christmas cards. Who among us hasn’t received a nightmarish JibJab video with your face stuck on a dancing reindeer? AI, however, is an entirely different beast. There may be some situations where this really comes in handy, but Christmas cards shouldn’t be one of them.
No one forces you to be “creative”
Here’s the thing: It’s perfectly fine to just drop a photo of your child or pet into a premade Christmas card template. You don’t need to turn into an elf or create a caption that would be suitable for a New York comic strip. There’s nothing wrong with a simple selfie from a recent trip or a group photo of your family in matching pajamas.
It often feels like people who use generative AI for this sort of thing are simply doing too much. Not all of us have the Photoshop skills to create our own card from scratch, and that’s okay! Christmas cards are not meant to be the final exam in graphic design school. There’s no reason to burn multiple bottles of water to impress your loved ones with fake creativity.

Generating images for a Christmas card sucks, but it’s not the worst thing someone can do. Using AI to write messages to friends and family is just sad. There’s nothing personal about it.
I would be personally offended if I found out someone cared so little that they were using AI to write me a message. They couldn’t think of Nothing say it alone? Somehow it’s worse than just signing your name on a store-bought card. At least they wouldn’t try to pass it off as their own writing.
No one expects a Pulitzer Prize-winning short story detailing the past year. I would rather someone just say “I hope you have a great 2026!” » than generating a soulless summary with AI. Knowing that someone took the time to write something on their own, especially if it’s handwritten, is far more important than formatting and grammatical errors.

It all comes down to one thing we’ve all been told a million times: it’s the thought that counts. It’s by putting in the effort that the process is worth it. When you take that away, it amounts to not sending anything at all. It’s about looking at months of photos, finding a cute model, and writing a heartfelt message. Even walking down the greeting card aisle and choosing a card requires more thought than using AI.
As cheesy as it may sound, Christmas is a time of warmth, love and togetherness for many people. There’s nothing more cold and sterile than a bot-generated map.
