Pluribus episode 7 ending explained: what happens to Carol and Manousos in the new Apple TV show?
Pluribus Episode 7 has arrived on Apple TV – and while it doesn’t reveal anything new about The Others and/or The Joining, it’s still a very important chapter.
Entitled “The Gap”, PluribusThe final entry splits its time between protagonist Carol and Manousos. I speculated that a team was being considered following Pluribus episode 6 and, despite what happens to them – and especially Manousos – in “The Gap,” I am even more confident that they will cross paths soon.
Does Manousos die in episode 7 of Pluribus?
No. Well, we don’t know if he survives the life-threatening injuries he sustains in “The Gap.” However, given that he has been positioned as an important character in the sci-fi mystery drama thus far, it would be a disappointing end to his time on the series if he were killed off.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. The final episode of the Apple TV series doesn’t reunite us with Manousos, who is on a mission to find Carol, until a third of its duration is up. And, for the next 10 minutes, we simply watch Manousos’ travels across the country as he learns English — via a language course on tape — so that he can communicate with Carol once they finally meet.
Eventually, he reaches a point his trusty convertible can’t pass: the Darién Gap, a 100km-wide dense and dangerous rainforest that bridges the gap between Colombia and Panama. There, he is greeted by a small group of the Others, who implore Manousos not to try to cross the isolated and treacherous jungle.
If we’ve learned anything about one of the main supporting characters from the best Apple TV shows, it’s that he’s just plain stubborn. So, Manousos ignores the call of the Others and continues his quest to eventually meet Carol.
As expected, things soon go south. Slipping on a rock, Manousos falls and is impaled on a Chunga palm, whose bark is covered in 20cm-long spikes teeming with bacteria. As the Others had warned earlier, even the slightest cut can lead to a fatal infection. Being stabbed by many thorns is therefore a recipe for disaster.
Manousos attempts to burn off the infection from the wounds on his back using his hatchet, which he heats over a fire later that night. Unfortunately, this does not prevent his condition from deteriorating. The next day, delirious from the infection and physically exhausted from his work, Manousos, weakened, collapsed.
When all hope seems lost, the Others, whom Manousos has refused to receive since we met him, come to his aid. Emergency responders arrive on the scene by helicopter and, although we don’t see them airlift him to safety, we can assume that they succeed.
The big question now is: where is Manousos? Given that one of the Others told him they’d be happy to take him to New Mexico so he could meet Carol in person, I’m guessing he was taken to a hospital in Albuquerque. If I’m right, we might be privy to the duo finally bonding in episode 8 or this season’s finale.
Does Carol try to commit suicide in the seventh episode of Pluribus?
Truth be told, things don’t seem so easy for Carol either.
Empowered by having learned that the Others cannot turn her into one of them without a) acquiring stem cells from her and b) doing so with her consent, Carol begins to live her life to the fullest again. Indeed, now that she knows she’s not living on borrowed time as one of the 13 immune people left alive before The Joined found a way to convince her to join them, Carol begins to indulge in all of life’s frivolities.
Anyway, for a while. After the end of the Manosos section of “The Gap”, the story moves forward 34 days before we are left with a depressed Carol. Sitting outside her house, a beer in hand and surrounded by fireworks that Carol has programmed to go off intermittently, she’s clearly struggling. Heck, Carol even apparently prepared to bump into herself as one of said fireworks was positioned to shoot directly at her. Imagine an extremely close encounter as it flies past his face before exploding and setting the roof of a nearby house on fire.
The next day we see Carol go to her local hardware store to pick up a paint roller and a large tub of white paint, then use them to write something on the tarmac of her cul-de-sac.
As seen in the image above, Carol paints the words “come back.” The reason? Even the most misanthropic person in the world misses real human interactions. Imagine a now-recovered Zosia pulling into Carol’s driveway and, after a somewhat awkward standoff, an emotionally vulnerable Carol falling into Zosia’s arms as she fights back tears.
The final scene of episode 7 raises many questions. Is this the end of the Others’ self-imposed breakup with Carol? Is Carol finally ready to work and live alongside them? Did Zosia Really Forgive Carol For Almost Killing Her? Pluribus episode 4? And will the status quo be upended again if (or rather when) Carol and Manousos end up meeting? Hopefully all these questions will be answered when Episodes 8 and 9 arrive on one of the best streaming services in the world.
