Bill Maher on Friday called on California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff to call out the Democratic Party’s apparent hypocrisy regarding President Trump’s military actions in Iran.

At one point, Maher wanted to know Schiff’s opinion on a statement made by the administration, saying: “The President has the constitutional authority to direct the use of military force because he could reasonably determine that such use of force was in the national interest.” » Is that too vague for you? » asked Maher.

Maher then cornered Schiff when he revealed that the statement was made by former President Barack Obama’s administration when the United States was conducting military operations in Libya.

Schiff then backtracked and changed the subject, saying, “Well, Obama initially made the argument that he could enter Syria without permission,” Schiff said.

“I and many others pushed back on that argument. Ultimately, he didn’t go after Assad, even though Assad was gassing his own people, because he thought he might lose the vote in Congress,” Schiff continued. “But I respect the fact that it was important to him, and the fact that he didn’t have support in Congress meant we weren’t going to move forward.”

In May 2011, Cato pointed out that Obama’s military actions were illegal under Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 of the Constitution, which delegates the power to declare war to Congress. Cato asserts that the reasons given by the Obama administration to justify its military actions were not sufficient since Libya did not pose a direct threat to the United States. In June 2011, Congress voted on the War Powers Resolution to decide whether to withdraw the U.S. military from Libya or keep them there. Schiff – then a representative – voted against the resolution to maintain the US military presence in the region.
