The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention will spend $3.2 billion to support local drug and vaccine manufacturers, including Wakiso-based DEI Biopharma. The aim is to reduce the continent’s dependence on imported pharmaceuticals. The financing and grant package includes a $2-billion pledge from the African Export-Import Bank to finance local drug manufacture and a $1.2 billion grant from the Gavi African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator.
US technology giant Nvidia announces a $2-billion investment to boost the UK’s AI startup sector, partnering with venture capital firms Accel, Air Street Capital, Balderton, Hoxton Ventures and Phoenix Court to boost the UK’s ability to compete in the AI market globally. Among the companies to benefit from the backing include AI biotechs Latent Labs and Basecamp Research.
