A carjacking suspect died after being shot by police in Boston Wednesday evening. Police say the officers involved were also taken to hospital but are expected to be OK.

The incident happened shortly before 10 p.m. on Linwood Street in the Roxbury neighborhood.

According to Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox, officers initially responded to a report of a carjacking on Tremont Street. They then found the stolen vehicle on Linwood Street.

As officers approached the car on foot and gave several verbal commands, police said the suspect accelerated and struck a Boston police cruiser.

The officers then opened fire.

The suspect was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said the carjacking victim was not in the area at the time of the shooting and was unharmed.

Cox acknowledged the dangers officers face during high-risk incidents like carjackings.

“This job is difficult, there’s no doubt about it. We face many dangers,” Cox said at a news conference. “Carjackings are very, very delicate and difficult things. »

The prosecutor’s office confirmed that the officers taken to the hospital did not appear injured but required an assessment of the trauma they had suffered.

The carjacking and officer-involved shooting remain under investigation.
