Mexico City – Boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. was expelled from Mexico, where he wanted for the so -called cartel’s ties, after his arrest in the United States for having exceeded his visa and lying on a green card request.

Chávez was delivered by the authorities and admitted a prison outside the city of Hermosillo, in the northern state of Sonora, said an official anonymity condition on Tuesday because they were not allowed to speak publicly about the issue.

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the news during her daily press conference.

“I understand that he was expelled. I do not know if it was yesterday or this morning, but we were informed that he arrived in Mexico,” said Sheinbaum.

Chávez, 39, had a mandate for his arrest in Mexico for alleged trafficking in arms and drugs and links with the Sinaloa cartel. Alejandro Gertz Manero, attorney general of Mexico, said that the investigation into Chávez had started in 2019.

The boxer, who is the son of the legendary Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez, was arrested on July 3 after his high -level fight with Jake Paul in California.

Sheinbaum said that after the arrest, she hoped that the boxer would be expelled to cope with his charges.

Chávez’s father was a massive celebrity in the 1980s and 90s that mixed social circles with drug traffickers and claimed to have been friends with the drug lord Amado Carrillo Fuentes.

The emblematic fighter defended his son after his arrest, but has not spoken since the expulsion.

The youngest Chávez fought against drug addiction for a large part of his boxing career, failing drug tests, serving suspensions and lacking in a blatant way while being widely criticized for his intermittent dedication to sport.

Chavez won the WBC average weight title in 2011 and defended it three times. He shared the ring with the great generational canelo Álvarez and Sergio Martinez, losing both.

In 2012, he was found guilty of driving driving in Los Angeles and sentenced to 13 days in prison. In January 2024, he was arrested for firearms. Police said he had two AR -style ghost rifles.
