Democratic congressman Jerry Nadler will not seek re-election in midterms | Democrats

Jerry Nadler, a Democratic representative of New York, will retire next year after 34 years at the Congress in a self -proclaimed decision aimed at galvanizing a generational change in the party.

Nadler, 78, who represents one of the richest districts of New York covering Midtown Manhattan, said that he had been persuaded not to present himself to his re -election in 2026 after witnessing the implosion of the presidential candidacy of Joe Biden last year. The former president was forced to abandon his candidacy in the midst of generalized doubts about his age and mental acuity. He was replaced by the former vice-president, Kamala Harris, who then lost the elections against Donald Trump.

“Watching the thing Biden really said something about the need for a generational change in the party, and I think I want to respect this,” Nadler told New York Times, who announced the news of his next retreat.

His decision to retire comes after a 26 -year -old Rhodes scholarship holder Liam Elkind, announced in July that he would dispute him in a primary campaign.

Elkind told CNN that he was testing Nadler after concluding that he did not have the energy or mentality to rebuild Democrats or put an effective challenge to Trump.

The Times quoted a person familiar with the thought of Nadler saying that she would probably approve a former assistant, Micah Lasher, 43, as his replacement in what should be a sung primary field.

For a long time as a member of the left wing of the Democrats, Nadler recently approved the candidate for the town hall of New York, Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist who won the primary of the party against more established suitors after promising a rent and grocery stores belonging to the government to fight against the costs of life.

The Democrats have met a clamor of a quarter generation since the loss of the White House, the Chamber and the Senate in the elections of last year.
