San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has only played in two games this season due to his turf, but he has a chance to return this weekend when his team takes on the New York Giants on the road. Purdy last performed on September 28, with Mac Jones take over starting QB duties while Purdy was sidelined.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan expressed some optimism Monday that Purdy would return to the lineup Sunday, but said the team would learn more during Wednesday’s practice. Once Wednesday, Purdy was again a limited participant.

Purdy initially injured his toe in Week 1, but was able to return for Week 4 – only to aggravate the injury again. So what does Purdy need to show to get back on the field? Shanahan said it was confidence.

“If he goes out and he’s limping and everything, he won’t be there. [on Sunday]. So he’s got to go out there and do the workouts and everything else and really let us know how good he feels because it’s hard to know what’s going on with the toe,” Shanahan told reporters. “Those are really uncertain things. Last time we felt like he was feeling pretty good, he looked pretty good in practice and then in the game, one hit and that took him out five or six weeks, whatever it was…four weeks.

The team wants Purdy, who signed a five-year, $265 million extension in May, to avoid another setback, but Shanahan noted it’s not easy to detect when a setback is coming,

“It’s a pretty sensitive situation and hopefully a few reps in practice and stuff will give him confidence that it’s better than last time,” Shanahan said.

Asked if Purdy would let them know by the end of the week if he felt well enough to play, Shanahan joked, “I mean, I didn’t give him a deadline.”

“It’s not as black and white as you would like,” the coach added.

Jones is dealing with a bruised knee but was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice. He will get another start if Purdy is unable to go as the 49ers (5-3) look to rebound from last week’s 26-15 loss to the Houston Texans.
