There are 100 firmness levels to choose from with the Balance Pro, and it also has the softest memory foam top layer of all its mattress offerings. I ended up gravitating toward firmer levels to compensate for this softness, landing at 60, while my husband opted for 80. It took about a week to narrow down our preferences and establish a baseline, as the Bryte app pointed out during setup.

Another striking feature of smart mattresses, in addition to customizable firmness, is compatibility with adjustable bases. Adjustable bases allow the head and foot of a smart mattress to move to different positions, whether to relieve snoring or to elevate the feet. We tried the Balance Pro on an adjustable base and ultimately decided against it, which wasn’t the case with the other smart mattresses I tested.

We found that the Bryte balancers were so stiff that we didn’t want to risk hardware breakage by just wanting the head and foot of the mattress to move up and down. I contacted the team at Bryte to confirm if it was indeed compatible with adjustable bases, and they said it was. But given the price of the bed and how the first attempt went, I’m sweating at the thought of trying again. The team at Bryte also let me know that it works great with a traditional flatbed frame, and I’m here to tell you: please go that route instead. Maybe even opt for a Thuma Classic bed frame to create a complete hotel aesthetic at home.

Over time, however, I didn’t mind that we technically lacked this typical smart bed feature. The Bryte Balance Pro can adjust its firmness on different areas, and I was able to detect the change seamlessly when I made an adjustment. I’m not sure I’d be able to make the same discernment if I had an adjustable frame propped up in zero gravity and other angles.

Make the wave

I’ve never been one for the massage settings, which usually come with smart mattresses. Technically, this functionality is achieved through adjustable bases rather than the mattress itself. To me, they usually feel like I’m trying to reenact a small earthquake instead of slowing it down. Not to mention that the vibrations generated by this setting aren’t exactly silent.

All Bryte mattresses, including the Balance Pro, offer a library of settings focused on meditation, falling asleep, waking up, and even a light massage. It’s not as comprehensive as the Calm app, but I was impressed by its effectiveness and integration into the bed design. Each area of the bed’s Bryte Balancers is activated to mimic waves, which Bryte calls “BryteWaves” that gently roll along the body, from head to toe, like a gentle ocean wave. By playing with the settings, you can add audio to guide you through meditative breathing and natural soundscapes, such as thunderstorms and acoustic music, to accompany this gentle rolling. Ironically, my favorites ended up being two massage settings: “Rhythmic Wave” and “Back Release,” in which the Bryte Balancers gently pressed under my shoulder blades before moving down to my lower back. It’s not a full body massage by any means, but it’s quickly become my favorite way to fall asleep.

Bryte Balancers also feature a “Silent Wake” setting that gently wakes you up without the need for an alarm clock. However, this was a random setting for us. Some days I noticed it, but others I was already awake and moving before the time I had scheduled to start. For deep sleepers, like my husband, they probably won’t notice it at all.
