UNC football to lose key defensive player to transfer portal

The North Carolina Tar Heels will need to retool their roster this offseason after the disappointing start to the Bill Belichick era. With bowl season here, the transfer portal will soon be open in early January. And already a few Tar Heels have revealed their decisions.
On Wednesday, a key defensive player announced he plans on entering the transfer portal. Per multiple reports, Tyler Thompson will enter the transfer portal as North Carolina loses one of their best players on the defensive side of the football.

He had a breakout season in Chapel Hill, finishing with 7.5 sacks and finishing fourth in the ACC in sacks this season, including having three against Stanford.
Thompson spent three seasons in Chapel Hill as a holdover from the Mack Brown era. He appeared in just three games in 2023 and then saw that increase to 12 in 2024. Now, he’s looking for a new home in hopes he can continue after his breakout season.
