Russia Claims to Have New ‘Invincible’ Missile
Russia once again claims to have a doomsday weapon. It was once the “Tsar Bomba”, a massive thermonuclear weapon, the most powerful ever built, with a yield of 50 to 55 megatons of TNT. It is now a cruise missile, which Vladimir Putin himself describes as “invincible”.
Putin also claims to have conducted “a successful test” of the weapon and is working on its deployment.
Moscow has successfully tested its new “invincible” nuclear-capable cruise missile, and the Kremlin is now working to deploy the doomsday weapon, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday.
Putin praised the test in a video released by the Kremlin while dressed in military fatigues, with the strongman calling on his top general to start preparing the Burevestnik missile for potential use.
“We must determine possible uses and begin to prepare the infrastructure necessary for the deployment of these weapons in our armed forces,” Putin said.
The video (see below) only appears to show the launch of the missile, which apparently launches vertically with a rocket booster, like the American Tomahawk, before switching to level flight mode.
Little is known about the Burevestnik missile, named Skyfall by NATO.
Putin had previously presented these weapons as his “invincible” missile, capable of bypassing all current and future missile defense systems. He also claimed that the nuclear weapon had an almost unlimited range and an unpredictable flight path, making it impossible to intercept.
Valery Gerasimov, chief of staff of the Russian armed forces, said the latest test showed the missile was capable of flying for 15 hours and covering a distance of about 8,700 miles, easily reaching New York or Washington DC.
If this is correct, then yes, the missile could reach American shores.

But is it really that efficient? Russia, in general, and Vladimir Putin in particular, are known for playing with facts. And the test video only shows the launch; it is unclear whether one missile was tested or several.
This missile has been in development for some time and previous tests were not optimal.
The head of Russia’s nuclear agency said Monday that the five scientists killed last week in a rocket explosion at a missile test site had developed “new weapons,” according to a report.
The accident occurred Thursday during tests of a liquid propellant rocket engine at an Arctic naval firing range on the White Sea coast of Nyonska, run by state nuclear company Rosatom.
U.S. experts said the explosion may have been linked to the test of the Burevestnik cruise missile, known by NATO as the SSC-X-9 Skyfall, which President Vladimir Putin spoke about earlier this year.
That’s right: by “less than optimal,” we mean “explodes at an inappropriate time.” After all, the whole point of a missile like this is to detonate it on the target – not the test area. Especially not when highly trained rocket scientists are nearby – we assume they were actually rocket scientists, since they were described as scientists by the Russian nuclear agency, and were working on a rocket. Basic logic, you know?
A certain skepticism is necessary here. Traditionally, Russia has not been very good at cutting-edge technology. But precision in terms of volume, they’re doing very well, and whatever they’re doing with advanced, sophisticated cruise missiles, they seem to have a lot of traditional missiles, as well as a lot of artillery. They may not be able to hit Washington with this, but they have shown that they can certainly cause Ukraine a lot of trouble.
