California hit by heavy snow as avalanche leaves skiers missing

Nine backcountry skiers are missing following an avalanche Tuesday in the Lake Tahoe region of California, according to authorities. So far, six more people have been rescued.

The avalanche was reported around 11:30 a.m. PST (7:30 p.m. GMT) in the Castle Peak area near the town of Truckee, according to authorities. Weather conditions remain dangerous, with a high risk of further avalanches.

The avalanche and severe weather also left drivers stranded on the roads, with the storm affecting several highways, including Interstate 80 and Highway 50.
