The concerns increase regarding the safety of an indestion to the Ind. 49 and County Road 100 E, especially since business growth brings more trafficking in the development of Coffee Creek in Chesterton.

There is no traffic light at the four -track intersection which is an entrance to Coffee Creek.

Dunkin Donuts and Chipotle Mexican Grill opened its doors, and a Popeyes restaurant with double routes is almost finished. Net by, an interior golf installation, has also brought more trafficking, as well as the Allen law group and the companies of its building.

“The main security problem is that drivers are trying to cross east to the west or west to the east on four active traffic lanes,” said police chief Tim Richardson.

The Duneland School Corporation garage is located near the intersection and school buses enter the Ind. 49 by County Road 100 E, also called Voyage Boulevard.

Between the four traffic lanes, there is a crossing. Vehicles, ranging from cars to huge semi-trailer trucks, move to 50 mph or more on Ind. 49, a North-South route.

Last year there were an increasing number of accidents with a serious injury accident, said Richardson.

Managers of the City of Chesterton also noted that lighting around the intersection must be improved to improve night safety.

Municipal councilor James Ton, R-1ST, reported at a recent meeting of the Council that he and Richardson had a successful meeting on June 24 with the officials of the Indiana Ministry of Transport about security improvements for the intersection.

It was the second time that your Indot had on the intersection of Coffee Creek. You said he thought the city was doing better with this meeting, because the Indot officials said they would approach the situation.

Indot has the main responsibility of Ind. 49, because it is a state road, said tone.

In recent years, the city of Chesterton has been able to obtain improvements such as the addition of two turnways for each side of the Intersection Ind. 49 in Indian Boundary Road, as well as the development of pedestrian crossings.

Indot has also promulgated trucks designated on Ind. 49 and developed median multisgments for the use of the police.

“These improvements have taken time and did not occur overnight,” said Ton.

Cassie Bajek, spokesperson for Indot, said that the agency recognizes that there was a need for a

“With the long delay in projects, it is too early to say exactly what the design of the project will be,” said Bajek. The engineers are considering a certain type of project to “change the intersection” to improve security, said Bajek.

Indot also examines certain short -term potential solutions to fill the gap.

“No final decision was made to what it might look like for the intersection, but we have this internal conversation,” said Bajek.
