Former House Judiciary Committee counsel Julian Epstein said Thursday on “Fox News Live” that Democratic politicians are unpopular because they continue to go down the rabbit hole of “welfare state and identity politics.”

Epstein said: “The numbers are bad. Nationally, the generic approval numbers for midterms are not good. The overall approval numbers for Democrats in Congress and the party itself are not good. And that’s because, Kevin, we’ve talked about it a lot. The Democrats continue to fall into the same hole. They think the welfare state and identity politics are the answer to everything. And that’s not where find voters. And until they move away from that, their fundraising numbers and their approval numbers will continue to be way below where they should be.

He added: “70 percent of American voters are moderate or conservative. Progressives are probably 10 to 20 percent of voters. Yet they are the ones who have sort of hijacked the Democratic Party. And so when I say the welfare state and identity politics is the answer to everything, that’s the progressive liturgy. That’s the progressive belief. Democrats have a real opportunity. If the centrists could just step up their efforts on health care, for example, where prices are very affordable. The welfare state approach embodied by Obamacare is not working in terms of cost control. There is also a huge opportunity for centrists to take over right now. And that’s not about meeting the voters where they are.
