OpenAI’s Blockbuster AMD Deal Is a Bet on Near-Limitless Demand for AI
This agreement is only the last of a series of data center investments involving OPENAI and other technological companies. Shortly after its inauguration in January, US President Donald Trump announced that Optai, Softbank and Oracle would invest $ 100 billion in building AI centers on American soil and would pay up to $ 500 billion in AI infrastructure over time.
The gold rush of the data center is partly based on the idea that the models will improve in accordance with the laws of the scale, as long as they are formed on more data and calculation. “There is this basic story that the scale is the thing, and it has been true for some time, and it could still be true,” said Jonathan Koomey, guest professor at UC Berkeley who studies the efficiency of the computer center and the data center, told Wired in September, speaking of an Openai-Oracle agreement to create three new data centers. “This is the bet that many American AI companies are doing.”
Derek Thompson, an eminent economy journalist, noted in a recent article that the technological industry should spend around $ 400 billion for IA infrastructure this year – while the demand for US consumer AI services amounts to around $ 12 billion a year, according to a study.
Openai had a strategic relationship with DMLA before today’s announcement. During the AMD Advancing IA event in Silicon Valley in June, Altman briefly joined the CEO of AMD, Lisa Su, on stage. Su said that AMD has obtained customer comments for a few years, because the company designs the next series of MI400 chips, and that Optai is one of these renowned customers.
Altman noted on stage that the passage from the industry to reasoning models has exerted pressure on manufacturers of AI models in terms of long -context efficiency and deployment and that Optai needs “tons of calculation, tonnes of memory and tonnes of processors”, in addition to the NVIDIA GPUs on which the generative AI industry is so animated.
