The holiday season is the time to give, and there are many organizations that could use your time.

American author Elizabeth Andrews once wrote: “Volunteers don’t necessarily have time; they just have heart. »

Many Cass County organizations that rely on volunteers for crucial programs are currently looking for people with big hearts. With the holiday season and New Year’s resolutions approaching, there’s no better time to consider volunteering for a local group or nonprofit organization serving others.

The Cass County Humane Society, Area Five Agency, Salvation Army, Parkview Logansport Hospital, Emmaus Mission Center and United Way of Cass County are always looking for reliable volunteers. Even local schools, churches and youth organizations are seeking help for various causes and needs.

According to a 2018 survey by the University of Maryland’s Do Good Institute, which tracked volunteering from high school age to retirement age, participation has declined every year since 2003. A Gallup poll released in February supports the 2018 survey, saying that even after a brief uptick during the pandemic, volunteering has returned below pre-pandemic levels.

Volunteering is also a good opportunity to strengthen bonds, whether it’s a parent and child, a couple or friends. Volunteering with a child can also be a valuable civics lesson.

Across all age groups, volunteering has declined since 2005. About 25% of teens volunteered in 2015, compared to 28% in 2005, ending 30 years of increasing volunteerism among high school-age Americans. Less than a quarter donate to charity, a rate stable since 2008.
