Celebrating Those Things That Are Uniquely American (That You Might Not Think of First!) – RedState

There is no other nation on the planet where July 4 is a special day. We spend the day with friends and family of hamburgers and hot dogs, maybe swim and cap the day with a bright fireworks show. And while we do all these funny things, most Americans make an effort to remember the solemn meaning of the day. The idea of America is simple: freedom and freedom for all. But the other idea was that people would come from all over the world and create a unique American culture. Here are some elements that you don’t think immediately when someone says “America”.

Americans love sport. In places like Green Bay, Wisconsin and the South American, football is a religion, a lifestyle. One of the best things to come from this love of sport is the heel. Pending snacks, laptop and a cooler full of, as Rush Limbaugh would say, “adult drinks” and hitting the stadium parking. What if you don’t really have tickets for the big game? Thanks to technology, you can connect to your tablet or even your phone, put bratwursts on grill and encourage your team with your colleagues fans. Even time does not prevent Americans from tasting. We just add another layer of clothes. There is a good chance that you will not see European football fans in a stadium car park at the height of the grill. Only in America.

The automobile may have been invented in France and Germany, but there is no doubt that the Americans took this ball (we were just talking about sport) and that we ran with it. What emerged was the love story of Americans with cars. But not only the car itself, an entire subculture was born. Before the start of the interstate system in 1956, the busiest road in the country was Route 66. It ran half of the country, from Chicago to Los Angeles. But Route 66 was much more than a road. It was the roadside attractions, restaurants and motels that made it one of the foundations of American automotive culture. In St. Louis, we could boast of the Coral Court Motel. An Art Deco legend, with a garage attached to each piece for these intimate Motel Sans Tell connections. The cars came to cruise, cars and beautiful timeless machines like the ’57 Chevy, ’65 Mustang, and one of the best, the Corvette. No matter what year Corvette, they are all magnificent. If I seem a little biased, my father had a 2002 black corvette. It was the closest thing to the perfection that I have ever seen.

But the thing that could be better described as “hiding at sight” is only the glorious clutter of food, music and language that makes us all Americans. Our melting pot brought us tacos and burritos, egg rollers and Kung Pao chicken, fettuccine and lasagna, perroges and bratwurst. If you are in Saint-Louis, be sure to try toasted ravioli and a sticky butter cake. From the southern blues and gospel music from black and white Americans, we created rock ‘n roll, jazz and country music. And while people in many other nations could speak English, we are talking about “American”. If you are in Boston, “Wicked” is a compliment. But if you are in Alabama and someone says, “Bless your heart”, don’t thank him. They think you’re an idiot. In California, you may take out this classic car on the “highway” for a tour. And here in the Midwest, when someone asks for a carbonated drink, whatever the brand, he could ask for a “pop”. In Saint-Louis, “Hoosier” has an entirely different meaning from that of Indiana. We question your level of sophistication, not if you are really Indiana. Oh, and in Saint-Louis, if we ask you where you went to high school, we are just part, that’s what we do.
Celebrating America means celebrating everything that does what it is and made of us who are. Oh of course, America is not a perfect place, and we have our disagreements, and there are even those who protest against something or other today. But I must think that the vast majority of us celebrate how lucky we are to be Americans.
By only using food, where are you from?
