Right-wing political violence is more frequent, deadly than left-wing violence

After September 10, 2025, the assassination of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, President Donald Trump, said that left-wing radical groups fomental political violence in the United States, and “they should be put in prison”.
“The radical left provokes enormous violence,” he said, saying that “they seem to do it more importantly” than the groups on the right.
The best presidential advisor Stephen Miller also weighed after the murder of Kirk, saying that leftist political organizations constitute “a vast internal terrorist movement”.
“We will use all the resources we have … in all this government to identify, disturb, dismantle and destroy these networks and make America again safe,” said Miller.
But political decision -makers and the public need reliable evidence and real data to understand the reality of politically motivated violence. According to our research on extremism, it is clear that the claims of the president and the Miller on the political violence of the left are not based on real facts.
On the basis of our own research and an examination of related work, we can confidently say that most national terrorists in the United States are politically on the right, and that right-wing attacks explain the vast majority of the deaths of domestic terrorism.
Political violence increased
Understanding political violence is complicated by differences in definitions and the recent ministry of justice of an important study sponsored by the government on domestic terrorists.
In the United States, political violence has increased in recent months and has taken forms that are not recognized. During the 2024 electoral cycle, almost half of all states reported threats to elections, including death threats, intimidation and doxing.
Kirk’s assassination illustrates the growing threat. The man accused of murder, Tyler Robinson, would have planned the attack in writing and online.
