The House of Representatives censored the late Roderick Butler, R-Tenn., In 1870 for having taken a bridge pot for an appointment of the Military Academy.

The room also censored the deceased representative Thomas Blanton, D-Texas, in 1921 for having inserted a document in the Congress file which contained an obscene language.

And the deceased representative Gerry Studds, D-MASS., Faced censorship in 1983 for having sex with a 17-year page.

These are three of the 28 members never censored by the room.

Representative Ilhan Omar, d-minn., Did not become the 29th recently slapped member of censorship.

It is probably because representative Cory Mills, R-Fla., Was one of the four Republicans who joined the Democrats to block Omar censorship. And in doing so, Mills could very well have prevented himself from becoming the 30th member of the Chamber to be censored.

Censorship is the second highest form of discipline in the house. It is between a reprimand and an expulsion. Censorship is more than regular fault in a football match. A bit like a yellow card, which serves as prudence. But it is not a red card either, which triggers the ejection.

That said, censorship has become a “thing” in recent years on Capitol Hill. If the room was planning to censor a member, such an investigation would be in camera with the ethics committee. An investigation can take months.

No more. “Snap” censorships are now fashionable in the House of Representatives.

Here’s how it works:

Someone thinks that someone says that a colleague says something scandalous. So they simply prepare a censorship measure, pass over the head of the leadership of the congress by making their resolution privileged (which means that the room must Consider it within two days) and, if the Chamber vote in favor of your Gambit, this member is censored.

Do.

The representative Nancy Mace, RS.C., designed a resolution to censor Omar and strip the Minnesota democrat of her committee assignments. Mace accused Omar of having used inflammatory rhetoric following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

During an appearance in the Zeteo press press, Omar said “that there was nothing more actually used, than to completely claim that his words and actions had not been recorded and existing in the last decade.” Mace’s resolution cited in a profane video of social media not produced by Omar – but republished by her – who pulled an invective to Kirk.

Mace’s maneuver came as the leaders on both sides were trying to press the calm in the middle of the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

“Each chief has the obligation to reduce the temperature at the moment,” said the president of the Democratic Caucus of the Chamber, Pete Aguilar, D-Calif. “I do not agree with the retweet of one of our colleagues.”

Aguilar said that Mace’s resolution to sanction Omar was not “useful”.

“Each member of the Congress, and certainly the President of the United States, are responsible for reducing the temperature,” said the minority head of the Hakeem Jeffries Chamber, Dn.Y. “Nancy Mace wants to give ilhan Omar lectures and the Democrats on civility? Are you kidding? This is not a serious effort. It is an effort to encourage donors to his governor campaign.”

For his part, the president of the Mike Johnson room, R-La., Did not try to divert Mace. He said that “members have a prerogative to deposit privileged requests”.

“What she did was scandalous and dangerous. And there must be responsibility for the House for this kind of activities,” said Johnson. “I don’t understand why she uses this kind of language.”

Mace and Omar are tangled on the resolution of censorship on X.

“One -way ticket for Somalia with your name on it, Ilhan Omar,” Mace posted.

“I will soon, so drop the tickets on the way from your office. I’m next to it,” said Omar.

The Minnesota Democrat added that Mace was not “good or intelligent”. She added “You belong to rehabilitation, not to Congress.”

The Democrats defended Omar.

“When we all try to reduce the political temperature, when we all try to work to be able to approach our differences with humanity and we stand out from political violence, it is the bad decision,” said Katherine Clark, D-Mass of the home minority.

But the legislators on both sides are tired of the censorship trap.

“Whenever a republican in this house is offended, he is piling up on the resolution of censorship,” said representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Dn.y. “I’m not here to fight for everything for people’s courts for the day.”

“It’s climbing,” said representative Don Bacon, R-Neb., Mace’s maneuver. “You have to remember, we will be a minority one day. We will be at the reception of this.”

Bacon added that Congress is now “better to the shame of people in relation to legislation”.

In the end, the Chamber never took direct voting on the sanction of Omar. The Democrats rather moved to “table” or kill the resolution. This blocked a real vote up / down on Omar discipline. The Chamber then voted 214-213 in favor of the measurement of Mace’s measurement. The 210 democrats who voted voted for table. But four Republicans joined the Democrats: representatives Mike Flood, R-Neb., Jeff Hurd, R-Colo., Tom McClintock, R-Calif., And Mills.

A mill voting bulletin against the table would have reversed the final count at 214-213. This means that the Chamber would have immediately proceeded to real vote to censor Omar. But the voting of Mills with the Democrats froze Mace’s effort.

It is not known if Mills founded its decision on self-preservation. But if the house censored Omar, it would undoubtedly have triggered a resolution by representative Greg Casar, D-Texas, to sanction the factories.

Casar resolution accused the attack factories – which Casar denies. He also alleged that Mills had badly received the bronze star when he served in the army. But once the house has released the Omar measurement, Casar withdrew its plan for Mills.

Flood explained his vote at the table.

“I will vote so as to support the ethics committee,” said Flood. “If we were to continue a censorship action against this representative, this should be referred to the Ethics Committee. It should be studied. There should be a regular procedure. There should be a back and forth before making a censorship.”

Mace excused his republican colleagues who voted for table.

“They did not stand with Charlie Kirk. They did not support themselves with the millions of Americans crying his death. They stood with the one who made fun of his inheritance. They showed us exactly who they are. And we will not forget,” said Mace in a statement.

But censorship is now in vogue.

The room did not suppose any member between the studds in 1983 and the deceased representing Charlie Rangel, DN.Y. In 2010. But five members have felt the weight of censorship since 2021.

The room voted to censor the representative Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., For having published a cartoon video the representative killing Ocasio-Cortez.

The Republicans then began to return the same.

The room voted to censor the former representative and now Senator Adam Schiff, D-Calif., To find out how he managed the Russiagate investigation. Representative Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Faced a censorship for his comments after Hamas attacked Israel. The house censored the former representative Jamaal Bowman, Dn.y., for having drawn a false fire alarm. And the room voted earlier this year to censor the representative Al Green, D-Texas, for the president of Heckling Trump during his speech on the state of the Union.

The members have adopted censorship lately. The censorships characterized him as an “badge of honor”. They collected fundraising. Their colleagues have even designed a rally of pep in the bedroom well to drown the loudspeaker of the room when he emits censorship.

It will probably not be the last bankruptcy of the house in the field of censorship.

“It seems that every week, we want to censor someone for something,” deplored the representative Troy Nehls, R-Tex., Who is not a fan of Omar. “Many people say a lot of stupid things here.”

It is the Congress. So you can bet that someone will soon say “stupid stuff”. And unless the legislators can restore a little calm, there will be another effort to censor someone else now.
