Kamala Harris decides not to run for governor of California

Former vice-president Kamala Harris will not present himself to the post of Governor of California, she announced on Wednesday, ending months of speculation after his defeat in 2024 against Donald Trump in the presidential race.
“In recent months, I have seriously thought of asking the people of California the privilege of serving as governor,” said Harris in a prepared statement. “I love this state, its people and its promise. It is my house. But after a deep reflection, I decided that I will not run for the governor in this election.”
“For the moment, my leadership – and the public service – will not be based on elected officials,” she continued. “I can’t wait to come back and listen to the American people, to help elect Democrats across the country who will fight without fear, and to share more details in the coming months on my own plans.”
The decision comes as Harris seeks to preserve his ability to launch a White House race in 2028, if she chose to take this road, said two people near Harris. Although the governor would not technically prevent him from entering the presidential fray, the limits that a campaign on the level of the state would have imposed on Harris was a consideration.
“This keeps the door open for 2028,” said one of the people close to her. The person said Harris came to the decision after months of conversations.
“It was a really difficult decision, she really fought. She was very conflict,” added the person. “She wants to have the biggest impact she could have.”
In the short term, Harris envisages non -profit work and a possible CAP, said another source close to Harris. It is also about to campaign for other mid-term democrats, one of the sources said.
Harris held an office at the state level in California for 10 years, first as a state prosecutor, then for four years as an American senator, before she resigned to assume the vice-president after Joe Biden won the 2020 elections. She then replaced Biden as a Democratic presidential candidate in 2024 after abandoning the race.
A third person close to Harris who spoke with her on Wednesday said that Harris was looking forward to talking to the Californians and people across the country about this moment, but as a citizen. They insisted that Harris had a way to victory if she had run for the governor.
“Stay listening because she’s going to have other announcements and they are not around 2028,” said this person.
“She always wants to be part of the national conversation and talk about Donald Trump and be in debates and forums in California will not allow her to do so,” added the person.
Harris’ decision maintains the race to be the next Governor of California Grand Open. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who came by San Francisco’s policy alongside Harris, cannot be re -elected because of the limits of the mandate.
A number of democrats have jumped in the race to succeed Newsom, including Lieutenant-Governor Eleni Kounalakis; former secretary and attorney general of health and social services Xavier Becerra; The former representative Katie Porter; The former president of the State Senate, Toni Atkins, and the former mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, among others.
The party should keep the governor in the strongly democratic state, which Harris carried by 20 points during the last presidential race.
